Are you superstitious?
Mmm… am I superstitious? I’m not going to lie, I actually read this wrong at first and thought it said suspicious. My immediate reaction was, “Am I suspicious?” and my answer was… mmm, I don’t think so. I’d like to believe I’m fairly normal in that department.
Then I read it again and realized it actually said superstitious. My first instinct was still to say no. But after thinking about it for a moment, I realized I might be… selectively superstitious.
For example, whenever I spill salt I immediately assume it’s some kind of bad omen, which of course means I have to throw a little over my shoulder to cancel it out. Do I fully believe it works? Not really. Am I still going to do it just in case? Absolutely.
There was also a time when a picture frame with a photo of my friends randomly broke, and my brain immediately went, “Well… that can’t be good.” I don’t know why my mind jumps to ominous conclusions, but apparently it does.
I also kind of love the little ladybug superstition. The story goes that if a ladybug lands on you and then flies away, it will fly in the direction of the love of your life. Fun fact: one of my professors and I actually bonded over that story. She’s from Romania, and they have a very similar version there. Except in their version, they catch the ladybug and let it crawl in their hand while they sing a little song, and then they let it fly away toward the direction of their future love.
Which I think is very sweet… but I personally would never let a bug crawl on my hands because I am absolutely terrified of bugs. However, I have been trying to be a little more… accepting toward bug like creatures…..I’m working on it.
So am I superstitious? I don’t think so. But I do throw salt over my shoulder, panic slightly when picture frames break, and secretly hope ladybugs are out there working as tiny romantic matchmakers. So… draw your own conclusions. Are any of you reader’s superstitious or have a superstition that you like just because of the story?
